Homonyms

A homonym is one of two or more words that are spelled and pronounced the same, but differ in meaning. Examples include:

  • The verb to chase & the noun chase
  • The verb to quail & the noun quail
  • A well for water, feeling well
  • A rose in bloom, he rose up

Homophones

A homophone is one of two or more words that are pronounced the same, but differ in meaning, derivation, or spelling. Examples include:

  • Air, heir
  • To, too, two
  • Bale, bail
  • Berth, birth
  • Great, grate
  • Pride, pried
  • Bore, boar

Homographs

A homograph is one of two or more words that are spelled alike, but differ in meaning, and derivation. They may or may not have the same pronunciation. Examples include:

  • Bow of a ship, bow and arrow
  • The verb to object, the noun object
  • Dove cooing, dove into the water
  • He does not shoot does.
