英語では、a、e、i、o、u の５つの文字は、それぞれ２種類の音（読み方）があります。英語を母国語としない人にとってはやっかいな事ですが、これらの２種類の音を正しく使い分けることはとても重要です。
英語ではショートa とロングaというふうに呼び分けます。ショートの方はカタカナの「ア、エ、イ、オ、ウ」に近いもの。ロングの方はそれぞれの文字のアルファベット読み（エイ、イー、アイ、オウ、ユー）です。
